8 Months Old!

Exploring
Logan turned 8 months old on February 15th. That seventh month was pretty eventful! He learned to crawl! He was so happy and proud of himself when he figured out he could explore. He seems to be especially attracted to electric cords so any that were showing, I've had to tape to the walls. He isn't a very fast crawler and you can hear him coming a mile away! It's way cute. The only sad thing is that the happiness of learning to crawl wore off pretty quickly. Logan quickly discovered the world above his head and was frustrated that he couldn't stand on his own to see what else he could get into on the coffee table. He also often crawls to me and complains or even cries until I pick him up. And then when I pick him up, he immediately starts looking at the ground for something to play with! What do you want, baby? But I'm actually really enjoying this stage. I thought I would like the sitting up stage best (when he can't move and get into trouble), but he seems a lot happier now and more independent. I enjoy watching him explore new places and I especially love to see his smiling face when he finds me after I've left the room! Logan really is a happy baby and brings smiles to my face all day.

Logan has a funny way of chewing things

Logan is still a great eater and will eat anything you put in front of him, especially if it is something that he can feed himself. The only problem is that if I put too much on his tray, he will stuff his mouth as fast as he can and then choke! So I can only put a few pieces on at a time. When feeding him baby food, we have to give him his own spoon so he doesn't try to grab ours. But he can still be successful at grabbing ours and splat goes the food. We try to have him drink out of a cup every once in awhile. He loves it, but he's not very good at it. Sometimes he gets too excited and bounces around which makes it difficult to get the cup where it needs to be. He doesn't like water though. How do you get babies to like water? Logan has a total of 8 teeth now. Four on top and four on the bottom. So I'm hoping we'll have a little break from teething for awhile.

For the most part, he's finally becoming a good napper, but before he learned to crawl, he had decided for a few weeks that he only needed one nap a day for 4 out of the 7 days of the week. Pretty much every other day he would have only one nap. I would put him to bed at nap time (and he acted tired) and he would sit in his crib playing and talking with his blanket dog, blanket, and toes until an hour or an hour and a half had gone by. It was really frustrating because by evening, he was not a happy camper so I would put him to bed really early (like 5:30 or 6). And of course one of the days he didn't want to nap was the day I had to teach piano lessons (I go to the family's house so Logan comes with me) so he would get ornery towards the end. However, once he started crawling, he started taking 2 naps again. I guess he wasn't getting tired enough just playing in one place. But with it being so cold outside, it was hard to take him out for walks or whatever. Especially since I don't like being cold!
Watching the snow fall. He stayed there for more than 5 minutes just watching the snow.
Logan still loves to make noises with his mouth like clicking his tongue and smacking his lips. He also makes some pretty boyish growls. There are some things that he does that seem pretty boyish to me besides his sound effects, but I've never had a baby girl, so maybe all babies do it! But he's really rough with his toys. He bangs them and throws them and hits them. He has a big stuffed dog that talks and sometimes Logan will flop on the dog and bite him. Whenever he gets excited,  he hits whatever is in front of him, whether it's the ground, a toy, or a human! Luckily, it's not hard enough to hurt anything. He also tries to climb anything he can.

I really am enjoying being a mother to this darling boy. I seriously don't get bored being home with him all day. Of course, it helps that Nate is home for most of the day on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays so I do get adult interaction and of course Nate wants to spend a little time with his boy when he can. But I am really grateful to be a stay-at-home mom and I'm perfectly content. 5, 6, 7, 8 months ago, I might not have been able to say that (breastfeeding was just so hard it really tainted those first few months), but things are great now! Logan is a bundle of joy and I'm one proud mamma!

  1. Avery will only drink water and makes funny faces whenever I give her juice - even if I've watered it down a ton! I think it's just a matter of preference although I'm pretty sure most babies don't like water. I guess you could just keep introducing it and see if it helps. That's good he will eat just about anything! Avery doesn't like most vegetables and will only eat yams or sweet potatoes if I've seasoned them. Guess I've had this karma coming for awhile ;)

  2. I'm glad to hear how much you're enjoying Logan now! I didn't really start enjoying the newborn stage until Evelynn. And I enjoyed Spencer's newborn stage even more. I guess you'll just have to have lots of kids like me. :)

Thanks to WIC, I gave my first 2 kids a lot of juice (watered down 1:1). I can't remember how they took to water. I just always offered it to them, often from my own cup, when they were thirsty. With Evelynn and Spencer, juice wasn't an option. He may also still be getting his hydration needs from his formula. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just keep giving him the chance to drink liquids from a cup so when you wean him from formula to milk, he'll be a pro.
(Here's a tip: when I wean my kids from formula, I also wean them from the bottle. I don't provide milk or juice or water in a bottle after they're 1. But I do still occasionally give them formula in a bottle until they are about 13-13 1/2 months if I fee like they're lacking in hydration. I give them either a sippy or a regular cup. It's nice...and then I'm not tempted to use a bottle as a sleep prop...my dentist husband would abhor that anyway.)
